Best Super Mario 64 ROM Hacks Worth Playing_173

I have always been impressed with the push of people who create mods and ROM hacks to their favourite games.

Nintendo is famous for being tough on ROM hacking communities, however they survive thanks to this love all these founders. And think about Super Mario 64, arguably among the greatest platformers out of Nintendo’s library… it has got a lot out there.

I’ve recently gotten into hacks for Nintendo’s classic Super Mario 64 and I can’t help but admire the work put into them.

It’s especially impressive thinking about the bizarre and frankly antique way the sport is coded, which is to be anticipated in a pioneer of this 64-bit era.

I’ll do my part to fan the flames of ROM hacking and then share what I believe are the 10 top Super Mario 64 ROM hacks ever produced. Let’s dive in!

10. Super Mario 64: The Green Stars

A fairly good option to test out ROM hacks and decide whether or not it’s for you would be Kampel64’s SM64: The Green Stars.

It adds many levels and showcases a lot of what’s possible through those modifications.

It includes 130 stars to collect throughout many customized degrees. A number of which you are going to need to find by exploring the overworld using a Detective’s lens, as the founder made it a point to hide every secret very well.

The reason why it’s higher in the ranking is simply that the caliber of degree design varies more than it needs to.Read here romshub.com At our site

Some places are so simple they’re dull, whereas others need some hyper-specific trick jumps and feats just an expert can pull off without striving 200 times.

9. Super Mario 64: Kirby Edition

If you’d like to begin with something less ambitious then consider SM64: Kirby Edition by creator Dudaw.

This hack replaces the traditional red-capped plumber using the lovable Kirby.

It had been the first complete personality hack released on SM64, despite the practice becoming more common now I’d say the polish level remains striking.

Not only does Kirby go and creep as the personality needs to. But also power-ups are altered to turn the pink puff into a Boo or even a Thwomp, mimicking his replicate ability.

You can also ride Kirby’s signature Warp Star on several levels. Neat!

Anyone who has been after the SM64 ROM hacking scene is familiar with Kaze Emanuar, the hard-working behind a lot of the most ambitious and amazing hacks for your classic game.

It’s less scope than some of the others but exactly the same final quality.

It plays much like Super Mario 3D Land, including 33 new degrees which are far more linear than the ones existing in vanilla.

Mario also has a couple of new moves to oppose them. Namely, a Butt Bounce and an Aerial Dive, which you’ll find remarkably useful.

7.

Produced by ROM hacking character BroDute and several collaborators, the Star Revenge series is one of the very prolific hack series in life. Counting over six chief releases plus a slew of remakes.

SM64: Star Revenge Redone is actually the latest version of this first hack. It includes over 125 new celebrities to gather over 13 different levels.

What makes this hack unique, apart from the surreal humor and self-referencing jokes, is its complex lore and also an overarching narrative you’d have to play every launch to comprehend.

If you would like to set out on such a pursuit, this is the place to begin.

6. Super Mario Bros. 64

For something unusually less complex we have Kaze Emanuar’s Super Mario Bros. 64, that brings the side-scrolling platformer appeal of older Mario games like Super Mario World.

Wonderful, right?

I love how the camera angle is tilted just in the perfect diagonal angle so that you can appreciate depth without abandoning the side-scrolling perspective entirely.

You can play with as many characters from the Mario universe such as Luigi, Wario, fan-favorite Waluigi, and Mario himself.

5.

Sometimes all we are looking for is a more challenging experience from our all time favourite games.

If that’s you, think about Super Mario 74 from Lugmilors.

It has 120 new celebrities to get in its numerous custom levels, all of which present a considerably increased difficulty than your ordinary vanilla SM64 specific situation.

This includes most boss battles, which now have added challenges like needing to swing Bowser higher to reach the bombs.

When you clear it you could go to play Super Mario 74 Extreme Edition, and it can be a more ridiculous, Kaizo-level challenge.

4. Super Mario 64 Sapphire

Given the artisanal nature of ROM hacking in general, I’d say most of these games have… varying degrees of quality, to say the very least.

Yet among the most frequently great hacks around is NebulaSM64’s Super Mario 64 Sapphire, a short but sweet encounter comprising 30 stars spread across six amazing levels.

And these amounts feature a number of the most beautiful landscapes ever seen on this 64-bit engine.

If you’re trying to find a quick Mario fix using a spin on SM64 then this is it.

3. Super Mario: Star Road

I think in showing respect and admiration for initiating attempts in almost any field.

This massive ROM hack was one of the initial ones with any mainstream appeal outside the hardcore ROM hacking network.

It has 130 stars to collect in certain excellent amounts, introduces new enemies, also has a revamped soundtrack that gives it the feel of a legitimate sequel.

Considering the intense focus on tight platforming, in addition, it is important to notice all of the work put into creating a more friendly camera than the original.

2.

Another classic hack that revamps several vital technical aspects from the game is Frauber’s SM64: The Lost Stars.

It includes a day/night cycle, a much better camera, and a whole lot of other tweaks which enhance gameplay.

You might even undergo its ten degrees as Luigi if you’re tired of the plumper brother.

With upgraded bosses, new enemies, and remixed music which contains some original compositions made particularly for the hack, it seems like an entirely fresh take on the SM64 formula.

1.

When there’s one ROM hack worthy of being considered SM64’s sequel, then it has to be Last Impact by Kaze Emanuar.

It includes a great deal of custom assets, new bosses made out of scratch, and even new power-ups. All really cool things, like a Yoshi which you can ride and Super Mario Sunshine’s FLUDD, one of the items.

This game is really a technical marvel!

Each of the new levels is entirely separate from what we’re used to viewing. And getting each of the 130 new stars introduces several specific challenges.

There’s a level where you are going to have to play Mario Party games to find the coveted body!

Sureit may find a tad wonky here and now there. And it is not without its fair share of bugs.

But that’s to be expected of such an enormous undertaking, and also a thing you can generally ignore since this rom hack is SM64’s next level.
